2019 Wilderness Speaker Series

The 2019 Wilderness Speaker Series is presented by The Bob Marshall Wilderness Foundation, Montana Wilderness Association- Flathead-Kootenai Chapter, Northwest Montana Fire Lookout Association, and Natural Resources Conservation Management Program at FVCC. The speaker series is hosted at the Flathead Valley Community College's Art and Technology Building, in room 139. Lectures are held monthly from February through April from 7-8:30 P.M. and are free to attend.

2019 WILDERNESS SPEAKER SERIES 

FEBRUARY 6TH: “Rangers, Trappers and Trailblazers”
Speakers: John Fraley, Author and FVCC Adjunct faculty member John's presentation will focus on Forest Service Ranger Henry Thol's patrols in the upper South Fork in the early days, Big Prairie rangers, and the 1928 trip of the Bob Marshall's through the South Fork. Fraley will describer how Bob's wilderness ethic may have been informed by this 8-day breakneck trip.

MARCH 6TH: “Wilderness Fisheries Management
Speaker: Jim Vashro; retired FWP fisheries manager, Leo Rosenthal; FWP fisheries biologist, Matt Boyer; FWP science program supervisor

Montana FWP fisheries managers will describe efforts to preserve fisheries integrity in the BMW. Fish population estimates and creel surveys were first used to establish fishing regulations in the early 8s. Subsequent census and bull trout management efforts will be discussed. Finally, the efforts to remove non-native rainbows and Yellowstone Cutthroat Trout to preserve the integrity of the South Fork will be discussed.   

APRIL 3RD: "Women Write in the Wilderness"
Speaker: Susan Purvis; Explorer, Educator, and Go Find Author

How a backpack trip in the Bob Marshall Wilderness changed my life and launched my career. Susan discusses challenges writing about her personal experiences with wild places and how women's narratives can connect people to the landscape.
