Biking Glacier's Sun Road | Glacier National Park, Montana

It's a rite of spring: as the petals are opening along Montana's Going-to-the-Sun Road, the pedals are turning up the highway's scenic corridor. Glacier Park's famed mountain route is open to hikers and bikers long before the gates swing wide for summer motorists, providing a perfect family outing. Each spring, we spend hours biking the Sun Road's gentle grade, enjoying the park without the bustle of traffic.

I wrote about this annual adventure for the Missoulian:

"Spring unfolds little by little in Glacier National Park, as the world wakens slowly from a long winter nap, and it takes a while to get up to speed.

The season begins on snowshoes and skis, ends with cars whizzing past – and in between springtime moves at the speed of bicycle. That’s the speed of April and May, when plows clear the lower reaches of Going-to-the-Sun Road and cyclists lay claim to backcountry blacktop beyond the gate."
