In Crowsnest Pass there are no options anymore for fresh produce. Last year, fresh Okanagan products were brought into the old Save-On store. Fresh veggies are the mainstay of our diet. I decided to scout all Farmer’s Markets within an hour and half driving time. There was one local producer in Pincher Creek -- I was pleased to see very fresh chard, zuccini (green & yellow), beautiful tomatoes, green onions with bulblets (also sweet and purple large onions), potatoes, beautiful beets (gold and regular), carrots, small strawberries (locally grown and fresh picked), raspberries. There was also a cooler of eggs from chicken fed organically, for much less than what I have been paying for organic eggs, when I can get them. At 10:56 there was already a line waiting; the woman in front of me said that she usually is the first, but we must have had a dozen others before us today. I got the chard, green onions, tomatoes, yellow zuccini for salads, strawberries, raspberries. I’ll slice the rainbow chard stems for color in our salads; the leaves I'll braise with anchovies (washed to remove most of the salt) and chop in some of the green onion bulblets and fresh garlic. Strawberries and raspberries will be for breakfast and/dessert with Greek yogurt (a touch of honey for my husband, plain for me). The tomatoes will be sliced and made into lunch sandwiches with English cucumbers (I think field grown, perhaps not) I got from a vendor at the Blairmore Market last night. Also, despite my reasonable side of the brain resisting, got a cherry pie which I couldn't resist tasting after lunch from another vendor ($12). Nice and tart with enough sweetness to make it a dessert, but not cloying sweet. I will be standing in line next week at 11am in Pincher Creek, the quality of produce (and cherry pie) worth the half an hour drive from the Pass. (The Farmer's market in Blairmore, Thursday 4-8, has produce vendors, not producers, selling products, except the Hutterites. I did get some fresh snacking peppers from a vendor two weeks ago. The Hutterite carrots were sweet and fresh, their beets baked and in the refrigerator ready to be sliced up into salads. The beet greens served up steamed and in a cream sauce one day, and braised with anchovies and garlic the next day. The producer at Pincher Creek picked the chard & onions within the last 12 hours, probably this morning -- all the veggies were incredibly fresh!) As long as salad greens are being raised by the producer at the Fernie Sunday market, we will go there for salad greens, but the Pincher producer will be the place to go for our other fresh veggies.
