Purple Mountain Lavender Farm | Lakeside, Montana

In the mountains that rise above the western shore of Flathead Lake sits the Purple Mountain Lavender Farm. After journeying up a winding road, visitors are transported to a true oasis: rolling hills of fragrant lavender with unobstructed views of Flathead Lake and Valley below. The farm is reminiscent of a secret garden yet one that exudes hospitality and seeks to provide a meaningful experience for all those fortunate enough to visit.

Purple Mountain Lavender invites visitors to participate in all aspects of the farm. During summer, tour the field and savor the calm atmosphere. At harvest time, volunteers are invited to spend the day harvesting and bunching fresh lavender for drying. For those curious about experimenting with lavender’s healing and culinary properties, the farm offers a variety of workshops. And if visitors are looking to treat themselves to a particularly special evening, the farm hosts on-farm dining events, such as “Fine Dining with Lavender,” during which a local chef creates a multi-course farm-to-table dinner featuring products from local farms and a different variety of lavender in each course.

For owner Deb and her husband, Greg, making the move to the Flathead Valley in the NW Montana was a longtime dream. When at last they settled on forty acres in the mountains of Lakeside, they researched transforming a portion of their wooded property into a farm. They decided on lavender for its versatility and hardiness in Northwest Montana’s harsh summer and winter conditions. Due to their location, they do not have an irrigation system. They supplement rainfall only with hand watering. As of this season, Deb tends to over 1,000 plants consisting of over thirty varieties, all grown using only organic methods. Throughout the year, she transforms the lavender into culinary, decorative, and personal care products that are sold in the barn shop on site as well as on her website.
